Technical Tours

Geohazards 9 is hosting two Technical Tours on Monday, June 1.

North Saskatchewan River Geology & Landslide Rafting Tour

9:00 AM | 4.5 Hours

Join us on a float that will journey through time and tell the geological story that began over 70 million years ago along the North Saskatchewan River valley. While the modern river valley only took its current shape about 12,000 years ago following the ice sheet retreat, ongoing erosion of the soft shales and sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous Horseshoe Canyon Formation and overlying glacial sediments has continued to shape the modern river valley.Today, this valley is a living landscape of constant movement. As we navigate the river’s bends, keep an eye on the steep valley walls. You are witnessing a powerful geological process: lateral erosion. The river continually carves into the "toe" or base of these slopes, particularly on the outside of its meanders, which can trigger large-scale landslides. This isn’t just a float – it’s an experience for those looking to reconnect with nature, history, and the spirit of Edmonton. Take a moment to breathe it all in—the energy of the river, the pulse of the city, and the sense of adventure that only a journey like this can bring.Join geologists and engineers from the Alberta Geological Survey and the City of Edmonton for a 4.5-hour interpretive float through the heart of the city. Discover hidden riverfront secrets, hear the stories of Edmonton’s past, and learn about the vital role the North Saskatchewan River plays in our lives.

River Valley Walking Tour

12:30 PM | 3 Hours

Join us for a walking tour of North Saskatchewan River valley slope near the University of Alberta with discussion on local geology, landsliding, and historic coal mining activity. The tour will be led by local geotechnical engineers with familiarity of Edmonton geologic conditions and river valley geohazards. The tour will be a pleasant walk in the park with a geohazard theme.

Tour will be conducted rain or shine.  Health and safety risks will be reviewed before the tour.

Note: Proper, hiking-appropriate footwear and weather appropriate clothing required.
